A popular beginner-friendly sport has announced two new taster sessions aimed at encouraging more residents to play in Salford.
Try Tag Rugby Salford has experienced a substantial uptick in participation across its nine- and ten-week programmes, with more than 320 players competing across 26 mixed-ability teams in its Monday and Thursday leagues.
Free taster sessions for newcomers will take place on Monday 15 June at Broughton Cricket and Rugby Club, where organisers hope to replicate previous successes in converting first-time attendees into full-time members.
To meet growing demand for places in the Thursday night league, a new Monday division was recently launched to encourage further involvement.
One of the sport’s main draws is its inclusivity, with female players making up 40% of all participants. Organisers welcome anyone to join regardless of ability, age or gender.

“The majority of people who are registered with us have never touched a rugby ball in their lives before,” said Cameron Green, Try Tag Rugby’s regional manager.
Some 60% of members are entirely new to rugby. To promote confidence and inclusion, the mixed-gender teams operate under rules where a try scored by a female player counts for double points.
Green added: “It’s a very suitable beginner sport that is super social, with the main aim being to come down and enjoy yourself whilst getting active.”
The club also hosts regular social events, including hikes and a recent boat party on Salford Quays, to help participants build networks.
“A lot of the people who sign up for our leagues are people who have recently moved to Salford or people from the area who are looking to make friends,” Green said.
“As an adult it can be quite hard to make friends. Of the current 18 teams that we have, many are made up of people who signed up after taster sessions not knowing many others, and they end up making lots of really good friends.”
Membership costs £63 for a ten-week season and £57 for nine weeks, breaking down to around £6.30 per week.
