Salford residents are being asked to share their thoughts about the replacement of the Clarendon Leisure Centre at a public consultation this month.
Residents are being encouraged to attend on Thursday 22 October 22 at Pendleton Gateway, 1 Broadwalk, Salford, M6 5FX. The drop-in times will be between 4-7pm.
The previous leisure centre closed down in 2024 after significant fire damage. This consequently became a major loss for the community.
Salford City Council have resolved a £5.4 million insurance settlement on the new centre and Salford residents will now have the opportunity share their thoughts before the Council submit a planning application.
Councillor Hannah Robinson-Smith, Lead Member for Culture, Heritage, Sports and Leisure at Salford City Council, said: “The fire at Clarendon Leisure Centre was a devastating moment for our city, but today marks an exciting turning point. We promised local residents that we wouldn’t just patch up what was lost and have always been clear that we wanted to bring high-quality leisure facilities back to this community.”
The location is set to be within close proximity to Salford Shopping Centre, making it easily accessible for many in the Salford community.
The proposal of the 25-metre swimming pool includes five swimming lanes with graduated depth for ‘learn-to-swim’ programmes as well as a family splash pad.
There is set to be a modern fitness suite, exercise studios and a 2-court sports hall for badminton, basketball and community sports.
The Leisure Centre will offer accessibility facilities, including Changing Places rooms and wet/dry changing areas.
There will also be a community café for Salford residents to enjoy, along with outdoor green spaces and wellbeing activities available.
Andrew Fethers, Chair of Salford Community Leisure, added: “This new centre will be built entirely around what local people told us they wanted. From kids learning to swim in the new pool and splash pad, to older residents keeping active in the gym or meeting friends in the café, this hub will be a beating heart that will serve generations to come while investing in people’s health, wellbeing and communities.”
“We know how much Clarendon meant to local people and how keen residents have been to see progress.”
Salford City Mayor Paul Dennett said: “We know how much local people have missed the leisure centre and we are now pressing forwards with new proposals.
“it is important that local people give us their view on these, as we shape a facility that is fit for all the community.
“These exciting proposals would provide a modern, accessible and high-quality facility that supports health, wellbeing and physical activity for people of all ages.”
