The North West Ambulance service are taking on a 250k run in 24 hours to support The North West Ambulance Charity and BBC Children in Need

The run will take place on November 12, ending the following day on November 13 and it will consist of three major North West landmarks. The team, consisting of 10 core runners, will begin at Beetham Tower in Manchester and will continue through to St Johns Beacon all the way to Blackpool tower before coming to an end in Media City.

Mark Newton, Associate Director of transformation and integration, said: “The three towers are iconic landmarks representing Manchester, Liverpool and Blackpool.

“These are the three places at the heart of the North West and the communities we serve.”

The inspiration for this challenge stemmed from Sarah Cox’s five marathons in five days.

Mark says that the event organiser and participants are all keen runners.

He said: “We thought we could set a route that was suitably challenging in terms of similar physical demands.”

The North West Ambulance service chose to raise money for BBC Children in Need and The North West Ambulance Charity.

Mark stated: “We wanted to support both our ambulance family and the next generation in our wider community.”

Mark shared how “helping people doesn’t stop” when ambulance staff finish their shift.

“We see everyday how much communities rely on people supporting one another.

“This is an opportunity to put those values into action outside of work.”

With no set goal in mind, they have raised £695 so far through families, friends and the community. But they hope to raise much more.

Jemma Kinch, head of North West Ambulance charity, said: “Together we are helping communities across the North West become more resilient, more prepared and better equipped to save lives.

“Our impact is ultimately about people and communities.”

Mark added: “Money raised for BBC Children in Need will support projects helping children and young people facing difficult circumstances.”

The challenge is a continuous relay and each runner is expected to cover around 50km each.

Throughout the night there is also a few guest runners who will be joining the challenge to support the team and the chosen charities.

Mark shared that: “Teamwork is at the heart of this challenge.”

“Knowing our colleagues are relying on us, and that we are raising money for two important causes, will help is keep going when things get tough.”

“Reaching the finish line would be enormous achievement.

“It would represent months of preparation, teamwork and determination, as well as the commitment of everyone who has supported us long the way.”

The North West Ambulance Charity said: “We would like to thank everyone who donates, encourages us, helped with the planning or supported us in any way.

“Every donation, no matter how big or small, will help us make a difference.

“Finally, I would also like to thank Run North West and GB Ultras for their support.”
