Salford residents are being invited to help shape the future of supported housing in the city with a public discussion.
The community are being asked for their views on the plans for the future of supported and specialist housing in the city. The public consultation has been launched by Salford City Council in relation to its new supported and specialised housing strategy, which will help shape housing provision and support services across the city through to 2037.
The consultation opened on Wednesday October 21 and is running for four-weeks. Service users, residents, carers and organisations now have the opportunity to their say on the city’s future in supported housing.
Supported and specialist housing helps people live independently by combining accommodation with care tailored to their needs.
People eligible for supported housing includes older people, supported living for people with disabilities, accommodation for people experiencing homelessness, survivors of domestic abuse, veterans and others needing additional support.
Salford City Mayor Paul Dennett said: “Everyone deserves a safe, secure home and the opportunity to live independently, with the right support available when it is needed most.
“As our city continues to grow and change, so too does the demand for high-quality supported housing. We are seeing increasing need across a range of groups, from older people and people with disabilities to those recovering from homelessness, domestic abuse and other life challenges. Meeting that need will require ambition, collaboration and long-term planning.”
The proposed priorities the council is seeking views on are:
- Helping people in supported housing develop and maintain daily skills, improve health and wellbeing and achieve greater independence.
- Develop sufficient, diverse and sustainable supported housing to meet local needs.
- Strengthening partnership working across organisations to ensure residents can access specialist and supported housing when they need it.
Feedback received in the next four-weeks will help shape the final strategy before its submitted for approval in 2027.
Councillor Josh Brooks, executive support member for housing and anti-poverty, said: “This strategy will help us plan for the future and ensure we have the right homes and support in place for years to come. We want to hear from as many people as possible, particularly those with lived experience of supported housing services and their families, to make sure we get this right.”
Dennett added: “The voices of people who use these services, their families, carers and communities are essential, and I would encourage everyone with an interest in this area to take part in the consultation and help shape the future of supported housing in Salford.”
