Australian singer/songwriter Matt Gresham shot to fame in his home country after he quit X-Factor to go it alone, now he’s supporting James Arthur on his UK tour so we sent Quays News reporter Liam Shaw to catch up with him.

Matt Gresham has recently come on to the radar after his incredible performances at Nannup Festival and West Coast Blues and Roots Festival in his home country, but he’s now got bigger plans to break into the U.S and UK.

His stand-out performance at SXSW started that spiral to stardom and he’s now embarking on his first UK tour supporting 2012 X-Factor winner, James Arthur.

“It’s a dream come true, and I pinch myself everyday” he tells me, “James is one of my favourite artists so you can imagine how excited I am to be performing on his shows and getting to hang with him a bit each day.”

This tour is a different move for him as well, it’s not only a chance for him to showcase some of his upcoming album but he’s performing solo, something he’s not used to.

“It’s a bit different to my normal set up, because I’m used to having a band with me, but I’ll play a bunch of songs off my next album so it’s a bit of a preview.”

“I have a new album out in August this year which I’m super excited about. It will all be songs I’ve written in the past 18 months and it’s a new sound for me too. There are still plenty of acoustic elements but I’ve brought in some electronic stuff too.”

His passion for music comes from his home where he grew up in and with music. That comes through when you ask him to describe his sound as well “Honest, Heartfelt, Passionate, Acoustic and Thoughtful” he says.

“Music is in my blood; I write about things around me which I observe. It can be about a world that needs more love or being away from home and travelling. I write a lot of love songs too but always try to find a darker side in it. One of my recent songs was about a man in gaol who missed his daughter.”

“I am very lyric driven so that is my favourite part and the first thing I do when writing a new song. I don’t have a least favourite part.

“I’m also hoping to get into a couple of festivals if I can across Europe and the UK this year, that would be awesome to do.”

On the rare occasion that Matt isn’t creating music or listening to Justin Bieber – he tells me he’s a huge fan – he chooses surfing as his way to relax.

“Surfing is my biggest passion and even on this tour I’ve managed to find some waves.”

As Matt tries to establish himself over here, he’s just happy performing and writing music to perform.

“I’m living the dream doing what I love for a living so I’ve got no complaints.”

You can catch Matt Gresham supporting James Arthur on 26th March at the 02 Apollo Manchester.
