With International Women’s Day taking place on the 8 March, here is how you can get to grips with how to celebrate in Salford.

Remembering resistance: a century of women’s protest in the North of England:

Approaching the day itself, the Working Class Movement Library are holding an event celebrating the last 100 years of women’s protest. The event will allow members of the public to get involved in different activities to discuss the changes and developments in the way women’s activism is today.

Salford CVS are holding a social media campaign:

On #IWD, Salford CVS are running a social media campaign to celebrate women’s presence in the city. You can nominate people you believe to be deserving here. Successful nominees will be featured in the campaign and will receive a gift. They will also be featured on Salford CVS’s ‘Women of the Hour’  in which an hour will be dedicated to celebrate their achievements.

The Diversity of Women at Siren Asylum:

This event features talks, fitness and the arts and will take place on the 9th March 2019. There are both morning and afternoon sessions, with fitness classes ranging from parkour to pole dancing lessons. The afternoon will feature a range of guest speakers discussing their experience of dealing with diversity in the female world.

Males are allowed to attend the talks, however the art and fitness workshops are for those who identify as females only. Tickets are available on Skiddle.

B.L.O.O.M. X dance for refuge international women’s day:

B.L.O.O.M, a DJ collective which aims to promote equality has teamed up with the charity Dance for Refuge.

On International Women’s Day itself, the collaboration are bringing together Kiara Scruro, an upcoming DJ duo with Solid Blake. IMOGEN is also on the line-up, bringing to Manchester her dark techno and electro beats. Tickets are available through Skiddle.

Cath Staincliffe and Jane McNulty in conversation:

On Friday the 8th March, Cath Staincliffe and Jane McNulty, a Salford born author, are in discussion at Walkden Library.

The event will celebrate women’s writing and a chance for the audience to hear about both author’s experiences in writing for TV, plays and fiction.

The event is part of Libraries Live. Tickets cost £5 and are available on the Salford Library website.
