Three student nurses at the University of Salford have been nominated in the ninth annual Student Nursing Times Awards (SNTA) for their academic achievements.

Melissa Connelly, Aisha Hussain and Charmaine Bolton are shortlisted across three out of the twenty-one categories showcased.

The winners will be announced on Friday 24 April at the Grosvenor House Hotel, London.

Margaret Rowe, Dean of the School of Health and Society at the University of Salford, said: “We are so proud of Melissa, Aisha and Charmaine. To have three students from our university shortlisted is fantastic and shows the incredible talent and dedication of our nursing and midwifery students here at Salford.”

Hussain was shortlisted in the Student Nurse of the Year: Children category for her work alongside children undergoing treatment for serious or long-term illnesses.

Charmaine received her nomination in the Outstanding Contribution to Student Affairs category for her work as an active member in the nursing society – organising events, opportunities and experiences for other students.

On her nomination for Midwife of the Year, Connelly said: “I was really surprised when I heard the news that I had been shortlisted – it wasn’t something that I was expecting at all! But I’m equally really proud; it’s something special that I’ll always remember.”

The judging panel will feature a mixture of both education and healthcare industry figures and past winners of the SNTA.

Shortlisted candidates are given the opportunity to pitch to the judging panel face-to-face to convince them why they should win.

Charmaine said: “Being shortlisted for this award is a tremendous honour, I look forward to the judging next month in London and representing the University of Salford (and bragging about how awesome our student nurses are here up north!).”
