Sale Sharks have announced the signing of England and British and Irish Lions centre Manu Tuilagi on a deal that will keep him at the AJ Bell Stadium until the end of the 2020/21 Gallagher Premiership season.

Samoan born, the 29-year-old has been capped by England 43 times, and will meet up with his new teammates at their Carrington Training ground today.

After 11 years at the club where he made his senior debut, Tuilagi was released by Leicester Tigers last week. Linking up with Sale Sharks means Tuilagi will be following in the footsteps of his older brother Andy who was also with Sale between 2008 and 2011.

With two Rugby World Cup appearances for his nation and over a decade of  Premiership experience, Tuilagi will be a great addition to the Sale squad in time for the return of competitive rugby.

Commenting on today’s announcement, Director of Rugby Steve Diamond said: “We contacted Manu’s agent and Leicester Tigers last week to discuss the player’s current position. After discussions on Friday, all parties – Leicester Tigers, Manu Tuilagi and Sale Sharks – agreed that the player was a free agent and was able to enter into negotiations with another club.

“Manu will be a fantastic commercial and playing addition to our squad and I am looking forward to seeing him join up with the lads at Carrington this week.”

The Premiership resumes on Friday August 14 with Sale travelling to Twickenham Stoop for the first game of the restart, an away clash with Harlequins.
