Salford Red Devils Chaplain

Salford Red Devils Chaplain Paul Hallam says it was tough to see former Head Coach Ian Watson leave the Club last week but insists there’s still plenty for supporters to be positive about moving forward.

Watson had been at the AJ Bell Stadium since 2014 but parted ways with the Red Devils on Monday, having been approached by another Betfred Super League side, believed to be Huddersfield Giants.

The 44-year-old’s departure followed on from the retirement of loose-forward Mark Flanagan at the conclusion of the Club’s 2020 campaign earlier in the month.

Speaking in his thought for the week via the Club’s social media channels, Hallam looked back on a week of change for the Red Devils.

“What a week it’s been. We’ve seen some changes in our team and that change is here to stay,” he said.

“It was difficult to say goodbye. The departure of our Head Coach Watto (Ian Watson) who’s been a fantastic coach and led us through another great season.

“Also, Mark Flanagan who’s had a fantastic career with us and been such a faithful servant of the Club as well.”

Having bid farewell to the pair, Hallam was keen to look to the future and encouraged everyone around the Red Devils to have a positive attitude moving forward into a new chapter for the Club.

“We have such a great squad. I know Seb (Sebastine Ikahihifo) said the other week he’d never been in an environment with so many uplifting personalities.

“That reminds me of how important it is to have the right attitude moving forward.

“Here at Salford, we’ve always had a lot of value on having a good, positive attitude no matter what the circumstances are.

“On the back of our shirts, we used to have attitude beats talent. It takes us further than talent alone will ever take us.”

Following a ninth place finish in this season’s Betfred Super League, the Club’s Chaplain also looked ahead to the beginning of the 2021 campaign.

Red Devils Chaplain says it’s another reason for supporters to be positive in the months ahead.

“Moving forward, we have such a great squad of players.

“We’ll be moving soon into a new season, so let’s keep a really positive attitude moving forward because we have such a great club and such a great fan base too.”
