Salford’s A6 corridor is set to be the gateway to a new business and residential district under joint plans agreed by the city’s council and university.

The plans will be set across 240 acres, creating 2,500 new homes and opportunities for cutting-edge creative industries. The plans will also include 300,000 sq ft of modern student residential accommodation.

A university statement read: “The plan sets out a vision for the next two decades enhancing connections with surrounding neighbourhoods and communities and tapping into the area’s unique potential to deliver an unrivaled place to learn, live, work and visit.”

It is hoped that the joint approach between Salford City Council and the university will help link local education with local industry.

The statement also read: “The joint approach will link education with local industry, arts, culture, heritage and residential across 240 acres offering one of the largest investment and development opportunities in the region.”

The plan will also see 25 hectares of transformed historic parkland, as well as a new school, local retail and health services.

Along with the new buildings, the plans also ensure the future of six heritage buildings.

Helen Marshall, Vice Chancellor of the University of Salford, said: “These exciting plans for The Crescent represent the next step of a journey that started with the construction of the first of our university buildings – the Peel Building – in 1896.”

“Working in partnership with the council and 5plus Architects, we have developed this masterplan to ensure that our campus is fit for purpose for the next twenty years, providing a great experience for our students and investing heavily in the future of the City of Salford.”

Paul Dennett, Salford City Mayor, said: “The City of Salford has attracted billions of pounds of private sector investment in the last decade and delivered nationally important regeneration projects that have brought new industries, new training and development opportunities and new jobs to the city.”
