The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers celebrated it’s 50th birthday this month and as a celebration, marches across the North West took place.

The Fusiliers celebrate a number of days when their former Regiments displayed particular courage, one of which is the battle at Gallipoli in 1915 which saw the Lancashire Fusiliers win six Victoria Crosses.

The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers came to fruition upon the merging of smaller regiments dotted around the land, the Fusilier Brigade, the Royal Northumberland Fusiliers, the Royal Warwickshire Fusiliers and the Lancashire Fusiliers – to form a new larger regiment, the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers.

The march, which drew hundreds of spectators, took place between Hulme Street and Salford Art Gallery on Salford Crescent at around 2:45pm on Saturday April 28th and featured an appearance from the Mayor of Salford as well as several others.

Gini Wilde, PR for The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, told one of our reporters that,  “We have been exercising our freedom of the city of Salford this afternoon with parades, this morning we were in Rochdale doing a similar thing and tomorrow we will be doing a parade in Bury.

Ms. Wilde also told us that, “The 50th anniversary is us really celebrating and marking that we’ve reached 50 years and there’s much more to come.”

The salute at 3pm was taken by Mr Paul Griffiths, Vice Lord-Lieutenant, His Worship the Mayor of Salford, Cllr Peter Connor and the Colonel of the Regiment.

Celebrations are a planned for the rest of the year, with a year long schedule of events planned spanning all across the country, including memorial services and battlefield tours in areas such as Newcastle and London.
