MediaCityUK hosted its first ever Christmas light switch on event on Thursday night in the Piazza with live music, food and special guests.

Despite freezing temperatures and down pours, nothing could stop the Salford community from coming out in droves last night to enjoy a night of festive entertainment.

The event, hosted by BBC Breakfast’s Mike Bushell, featured local music and dance groups; Salford Steel, Reflections, X Factor contestant Russell Jones and the Eccles Community Choir, who have just been nominated for an award for services to the community.

A number of street food vendors and bars were also available to enjoy whilst the acts perform, which some found handy to keep warm and keep out of some of the rain too.

The event also coincided with the launch of the Walking with The Snowman trail across the Quays. The route features 12 unique snowman sculptures to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Raymand Briggs’ Christmas classic.

The sculptures, all designed by different artists and spread across Salford Quays, will be auctioned off at the beginning of December to raise for Children in Need.

As such, for the momentous occasion of the Christmas light switch on Bushell was joined on stage by Briggs’ snowman and Pudsey bear fresh off last week’s Children in Need show when the charity’s all time total came to 1 billion pounds.

After the switch on and fireworks display children were free to come and have their picture taken with Pudsey and the Snowman.

MediaCityUK will be hosting a number of other events over the Christmas season, including a Makers Market outside the Lowry Outlet and the lights will be up for the rest of the season.
