It’s pancake day and cafes in Salford are serving pancakes in all shapes and flavours. And Salford’s residents have been telling us their favourite panckae toppings and fillings.
While the classic lemon and sugar choices were present and correct, we also heard from people who prefer branded fillings from Nutella and Lotus.
But some had completely forgotten that today is Shrove Tuesday, when Christian religions traditionally began a fast in recognition of Christ fasting for 40 days and nights.

Shrove Tuesday is the last day before Ash Wednesday, which marks the start of lent in the Christian religion.
Lent, the 40 days before Easter, was traditionally a time of fasting, so the idea of Shrove Tuesday was simply to use as much of the fats and eggs before the start of lent. Many will have heard the word “Mardi Gras”, which is French for “fat Tuesday”, used to refer to Shrove Tuesday.
Some argue that the tradition of making pancakes precedes Christian religion and is linked to pagan rituals linked to worshiping the moon – the round pancake can indeed be seen as an image of a full moon.
