A 23-storey £50 million tower block could be built near Eccles railway station as developers target the town.

Plans, backed by Silverlane Developments (NW) Limited,  have been submitted for the block of 272 one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments along with commercial and retail space on the ground floor.

If it is approved by Salford City Council later this year, the plans will see existing buildings on the plot, including a furniture store and smaller shops, demolished.

Steven Carnes, development director at Silverlane Developments (NW) Limited, said: “Eccles is being targeted by developers, investors and first-time buyers as it is the natural overflow from the successful adjoining areas of MediaCity and Salford Quays.

“Eccles is a completely sustainable market town, with the train station almost opposite the site together with the M602 motorway.”

Manchester-based comany Jeffrey Bell Architects, believes Eccles is “likely to see a similar scale of growth to that being seen across the strategic areas of Salford City Centre, MediaCityUK and Salford Quays.”

They added: “Eccles town centre is perhaps Salford’s most traditional town centre, containing a typical mix of uses including retail, office, residential, civic, transport, and health and leisure facilities.”

The development site is located on the northern edge of the town centre with Church Street to the east, Vicarage Grove to the north, Birkdale Grove to the west and John William Street to the south.

The architects said that a key challenge is to combine the past with the future.

“The architectural character and language of the new building is drawn from relevant and important local history; textile warehouses, coal mining and engineering.”

According to the developer, the scheme is likely to be determined by Salford City Council planners by May this year.
