Homelessness charity, Emmaus Salford, is celebrating after successfully securing funding from Nationwide Building Society’s Community Grant fund.

The Pendleton-based charity has received a £50,000 grant from Nationwide that will fund a dedicated Support Worker role for the next two years.

Emmaus Salford supports 22 formerly homeless people by offering a home, work in a social enterprise and an opportunity to get back on their feet.

Nationwide wants to support charities tackling the many issues associated with housing, and therefore made £500,000 available to causes committed to making a difference in communities across the region.

Nationwide invited applications from across North West & North Midlands region for grants of up to £50,000 to fund housing projects focused on strengthening local communities.

Heather Hazley, Nationwide’s Regional Director for North West & North Midlands, said: “We’re delighted to announce the outcome of our latest community grants programme, with eleven housing related charities and organisations across the region collectively benefitting from the Community Grant’s funds.

“In 2007 our members voted for us to donate at least one percent of our pre-tax profits to good causes and that the focus should be on issues around housing.

“The Community Grants programme is one of the ways we’re trying to make a long-lasting difference, helping people living without the guarantee or stability of suitable, secure or affordable accommodation.”

Nationwide has now awarded over £7.1 million to more than 189 projects across the UK.

Rachel Richardson, Community Director at Emmaus Salford, said: “We are delighted to be one of only 11 projects in our region to secure funding from the latest Nationwide Community Grant fund.

“The Support Worker role funded by Nationwide will have a big impact at Emmaus Salford.

“It will enable our beneficiaries to receive an increased level of support to help them to gain skills, training, confidence and the assistance needed to secure a job and their own home.”
