Betfred Championship side Swinton Lions have linked up with Manchester’s Wood Street Mission to help push their Christmas appeal as the festive season approaches.
Wood Street Mission have been supporting families and children from disadvantaged backgrounds for over 150 years in Manchester and Salford, the same amount of time that Swinton have been playing rugby league.
The charity fights to help meet the day-to-day needs of disadvantaged children and give them better opportunities in life.
The charity also values education, helping families with the costs of sending their children to school and also holds holiday book clubs.
In their battle against poverty, the charity helps thousands of children and their families every year and the resources the charity offer are free to access through referral.
With plans to support Wood Street Mission in 2021, the immediate task at hand that the Lions will be getting involved in is supporting the collection of toys and gifts for the charity’s Christmas appeal.
The Lions’ Operations Director Steve Wild said: “Although at Swinton Lions our central objective is of course the provision of professional rugby league, we also take great pride in contributing positively to the health and well-being of the wider community.
“As a family orientated club ourselves we have tremendous respect for the ongoing work of Wood Street Mission. We feel privileged to have this opportunity to support them, and to make a genuine difference to Christmas for children across Manchester and Salford.”

“They are not just a rugby club, but a community organisation that cares and we are grateful that they are so committed to helping children from struggling families in Manchester and Salford.”
The White Swan, 186 Worsley Road, Swinton, M27 5SN, is a collection point for anyone who wants to donate toys, books and so on, in good condition. Drop-offs can be made from Mondays to Thursdays, between 6pm and 8pm from 30 November to 17 November.
