A charity based in Salford will be providing people with a Christmas hamper this year that will include wrapped presents for children and everything they need to make a traditional Christmas dinner.

Society Inc offers support to vulnerable adults across Greater Manchester by assigning a mentor to each person who will either work towards a specific goal or simply provide them with someone to talk to.

As well as fresh meat from a local butcher, the festive parcels will also contain pampering items such as bath soaps, bath bombs, and skincare products, with advent calendars already been delivered to people at the start of December.

Louis, Operational Lead at Society Inc, said it’s been a difficult year for a lot of people in the community but the charity has been able to continue delivering their services throughout the pandemic.

He said: “There has been increased demand and we’ve tried to work around the barriers that are faced by Covid.

“It’s not been without problems but I think we’ve successfully met that challenge.

“We’ve done a lot of doorstep visits, telephone calls, socially distanced walks, and ‘fill your day’ packages with activities inside to help mental-wellbeing.

“People have come to us and they haven’t eaten in a couple of days so we’ve been able to provide them with food too.”

With 620,000 people currently living in poverty in Greater Manchester, Society Inc has set up a Covid emergency fund which means they can deliver essential items to people across the region.

The charity has also given out smartphones which Louis said helps to keep them connected to the community.

He said: “Some of our most vulnerable clients have not left their homes in many months so some of our staff have provided training so that they know how to contact on FaceTime and Whatsapp.

“We want to let people know that there are people out there that do care and are willing to help.”
