Salford Red Devils suffered a sizeable defeat last night in the sixth round of the Betfred Super League, going down 28-0 to a relentless St Helens side.
The game didn’t start off too badly for the Red Devils. Signs of life were certainly there but unfortunately no points to show for it, and they entered the break six points down.
The second 40 saw more of the same from Salford, periods of control yet a lack of final product which would prove costly.
The defensive woes continued as another four tries were ground out by Kristian Woolf’s side, punishing the visitors for the chances they couldn’t take.
The Red Devils had looked promising in the early stages, applying pressure and capitalising on opposition errors but ultimately not being able to convert the efforts into tries.
First-choice hooker Andy Acker was injured early on, paving the way for a rough night. Twenty minutes later, the first try was conceded – a surging effort from Alex Walmsley giving the hosts an all-important lead.
St Helens used that momentum in the second half, scoring again just three minutes after the restart with Theo Fages being the man to extend the lead.
Fiji’s own Kevin Naiqama made his intentions of keeping the ball rolling clear as an hour passed, converting a try to widen the margin for this high-flying side.
Just seven minutes later, Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook put the hosts even further ahead with a try while Regan Grace secured the final try of the night just before the end.
It’s not a result Marshall’s men will be happy with and his white-washed side have a lot to work to do to catch up with a St Helens side who are taking the season by storm.
