Salford Red Devils are closing in on the signing of Australian back-rower, Sam Stone.

He joined the Leigh Centurions from the Gold Coast Titans during the 2021 season and featured regularly in the teams 2022 promotion campaign.

Stone has been released from Leigh due to quota restrictions on overseas players, leaving him looking for a new club.

Salford are now looking set to acquire the services of the free agent for 2023.

The Red Devils were in need of second row reinforcements following the departures of Harvey Livett (Huddersfield Giants), Sam Luckley (Hull KR) and Jack Wells (Barrow) this autumn.

Stone made 39 appearances for the Newcastle Knights (18) and Gold Coast Titans (21) between 2017 and 2021.

He made the mid-season switch to Leigh and went on to play 28 times for them across the 2021 and 2022, scoring eight tries.

He is the son of former Huddersfield head coach Rick Stone and is a former Junior Kangaroo representative.

If they can finalise a deal for Stone, it will be their fourth signing ahead of the 2023 season following the acquisitions of Andrew Dixon (Toulouse Olympique), Oliver Partington (Wigan Warriors) and Adam Sidlow (Leigh Leopards).

Salford enjoyed a successful 2022 season, finishing 6th in the league and making it to the play-off semi-finals. Only narrowly losing to eventual winners St Helens.

The club will be looking to build on the achievements of last season, with head coach Paul Rowley signing a new contract and new signings to add more depth and quality to the squad, they will certainly be hopeful of going one better next season and returning to Old Trafford.
