Two events encouraging people to consider starting an apprenticeship are being set up by Salford City College Apprenticeship Team.

As part of National Apprenticeship Week (6-12th February) the team have arranged an Apprenticeship Open Day (8 February, 5-7pm. Frontier House, M50 3SR) to explain the roles of apprentices and what to expect.

This is followed by a ‘Meet the Employer’ event (22 February, 10am-2pm. CitySkills, M6 6AP), with more than 30 companies expected to attend. More than 83% of apprentices at Salford City College gain permanent employment at the company they start their apprenticeship with.

Sarah Allen, Apprentice Recruitment Team Leader, said: “Apprenticeships offer a foot in the door to a company that you might not have been able to apply for previously without any work experience or qualifications. Once they get into that company and gain that knowledge, they are in a better place for a promotion, once they’ve completed the apprenticeship. It’s great for CVs too, you get that strong work experience.

“For all of the courses, it’s very workplace focussed all the learning will be on the job. For some course, apprentices might be required to go into college one day a week. They will work alongside highly skilled members of staff who have worked in that sector for a very long time, find out about careers they weren’t even aware of.”

The team work to find apprenticeships in Business, professional and finance; Construction and the built environment; Education and early years; Health and social care; Hospitality, retail and hair and beauty; as well as Leadership and management. There are more than 60 apprenticeship standards offered across the six areas.

Mrs Allen explained how the event its open to anyone of any age and background. She continued: “We want to speak to anyone who is interested in apprenticeships.

“There’s a myth that apprenticeships are only for people aged 16-24, that’s not the case. they’re open to anyone. They can find out more about what an apprenticeship is, and how to get involved.”

Prospective apprentices do not have to attend both events, but are encouraged to come to the ‘Meet the Employer’
