Salford City’s striker has pushed for more consistency after The Ammies begun their season suffering losses to Walsall, Bolton, Morecambe, and Accrington.
In a pre-match press conference, striker Matt Smith was asked about the team’s poor start, which has left Salford City 18th in League Two.
He said: “The lads have largely been inconsistent for the start of the season. One solace is that we are only seven games in. There’s lots of football left to be played.
“Whether there is a little bit of hangover from last season I don’t know, obviously key injuries, a very light squad in terms of injuries to key players is not an excuse but certainly something that has hampered us. The miss of Elliot Watt I think has been substantial.”
Salford City has felt the loss of Watt heavily. Watt last season registered 15 assists in the league, showing his massive impact on the Ammies in the early stages of the season.
Smith reaffirmed his importance by stating: “He was our creative outlet last season and won pretty much every single award for League Two.”
“There’s a reliance on him to play the way we want to play.”
Neil Wood’s men are looking to mount a response to change the winds for Salford City in the league, starting with Notts County.
Smith continued: “Every game is an opportunity to get three points and start a run. Hopefully Notts County can start that run.”
Notts County go into the game having only lost one game so far this season. The Magpies have conceded 11 goals so far this season, showing there is an opportunity for Smith and his team to bring the result in their favour.
Salford City kicks off against Notts County on Friday at 7:45pm.
