A new augmented reality (AR) music trail has been developed to showcase iconic landmarks in Salford that many people don’t know about.

Megan Dawes, a production assistant at creator Dig Media, says the discovery trail will encourage people to tour the area and put Salford on the map.

Megan added: “It’s definitely formulated to encourage people to come to Salford.

“It’s brilliant, it’s got all these great venues and it is a shame that most people don’t know about it.

“[The app] is also for the people of Salford, to give them something that we can say ‘We’ve created this thing to put Salford on the map’.”

The app takes the user to important music cultural points of interest in Salford with a “mind-opening” augmented reality (AR) view.

Places such as The Kings Arms pub and The Lowry feature on the tour. You can access it all by downloading the Echo Salford app and walking to the sites indicated on the interactive map.

As users walk around the city, the app accompanies them with pre-recorded videos. Some are with local heroes such as John Cooper-Clarke and Peter Hook, who detail the rich cultural history of the city.

Bands such as Salford’s own Happy Mondays, for instance, were the founding fathers of the iconic Madchester scene.

The interactive walk will aim to inspire the youth in the city and also educate them on legends of the past.

The support from the funds made available by the National Lottery helped push this project to coming to fruition. Stakeholders like the University of Salford helped to provide career opportunities for junior professionals who worked on the creative work and photoshoots.

Users of the Echo Salford app have the chance of winning free tickets to a John Cooper Clarke show.

In order to win them, you can create a poem using other Clarke poems at The Lowry and submit to the app.
