Eden, a 12-storey office building in Salford featuring Europe’s largest living wall, has reached practical competition.
It may feel odd to use “grown” to describe the completion of a project – but in Eden’s case, it’s fitting given the building’s most recognisable feature is its massive living façade comprising more than 350,000 plants, from strawberries to ferns to bluebells.
Built on the site of a derelict surface car park, the 115,000 sq ft development is intended to form a key part of the English Cities Fund (ECF)’s £1 billion regeneration of the Salford area.
The Eden building will run solely on 100 per cent renewable electricity, with no gas heating or hot water, and has been designed using the UK Green Building Council’s 2030-2035 operational energy targets. Designed by Make Architects, Eden is also a LETI (London Energy Transformation Initiative) pioneer project.
In terms of tenants, accountancy and business advisory firm BDO LLP will take 23,000 sq ft across three floors, as part of its plans to become a net-zero firm.
