One hundred new affordable ‘eco-friendly’ homes are planned on Peru Street as part of a £1 billion 50-acre transformation of Salford around Chapel Street and Salford Crescent.
Developer Maus has added the plans to an existing 96 homes, called Greenhaus, which opened this week opposite Salford Cathedral.
The new development would have a mixture of one- and two-bedroom homes, two accessible ground-floor apartments, 11 homes for social rent, 13 for affordable rent and 72 homes as part of a rent-to-buy scheme in partnership with the English City Fund and Salford City Council.
The Peru Street apartments would be of an eco-friendly ‘passivhaus’ build, which could allow residents to reduce their energy bills by 90%.
Joe Stockton, development manager at ECF, said: “Creating places that work for people and the broader environment means looking at how we bring sustainable regeneration forward. With that in mind, we must consider all the ways we can create a positive impact in the places we work.”
Plans include a storage area for up to 100 bikes and fully accessible ground floor apartments with nearby parking.
Salford Mayor Paul Dennett at the opening of the development said: “We continue to be immensely proud of the innovation and drive to deliver forward thinking, sustainable developments in Salford.”

New resident 29-year-old Harriette Matthews found her previous living conditions difficult due to her scoliosis but moving into GreenHaus transformed her life.
“I just can’t put into words how much of a difference having my own home will make to my life. When I got the call from my housing officer at Salix Homes to say I had a place at Greenhaus, I just couldn’t believe it.
“I know all about Passivhaus as I’d seen it on Grand Designs, and I always said to myself that when I get my own place, I want it to be Passivhaus, and now I’m living in one – it couldn’t be more perfect.”
Residents of the new homes will also benefit from electric vehicle charging and a public square completed with landscaping.
The Peru Street development is set to start later this year.
