Walkden housing development

Spades are in the ground for a new £3 million social housing development in Walkden.

The new homes at Mayfield Avenue are being built to provide “much-needed truly affordable” housing amid Salford’s homeless crisis.

In Salford alone there are over 4,000 people on the waiting list for a home.

The 18-home development will consist of 12 one-bedroom homes and six two-bedroom homes, all for social rent.

With a total scheme value of £3.2 million, the Walkden development has received £1.3 million in external funding from Homes England and is set for completion in summer 2025.

The development is being managed by ForHousing, a company which is building a mix of properties in Salford which are due to be finished next year

Nigel Sedman, Executive Director of Homes at ForHousing, said: “Having recently marked a decade of building new high-quality affordable homes across Salford, it’s fantastic to get this development off the ground.

“We’re committed to making a positive impact in the local community and on the lives of social housing tenants. This latest new-build scheme is a testament to our pledge to help meet the pressing need for truly affordable, quality, well-maintained homes where tenants feel safe and secure.”

The development goes alongside the White Lion scheme in Swinton, which will provide 18 affordable homes, as well as 20 new apartments in the Allotment Road scheme in Irlam.

The £3.7m scheme has received £1.5m in external funding from Homes England and £270,000 from the Brownfield Housing Fund and is set for completion in June 2025.

Deputy City Mayor Councillor Tracy Kelly, Lead Member for Housing, Property and Regeneration said: “We’re all acutely aware of the urgent need for increased social housing in Salford and so this new development is a welcome addition.

“Together we must work to get to a position where we can ensure that every individual and families have access to good quality social housing that meets their needs.”
