Mind in Salford

This year, Mind in Salford want to do things differently by introducing the ‘Move in May’ campaign.

Based on Chapel Street, the mental health charity is urging Salfordians to set up their own movement challenges for Mental Health Awareness Month.

Emily Norman, Strategic Communications Lead at Mind in Salford, said: “We’ve chosen to focus on the connection between physical activity and the benefits for our mental health.

“Movement is a great way to slow down the hormones, boost your endorphins and connect with the world around you.”

Those taking part can set themselves a number of different movement challenges.

Emily added: “As it’s 2024, can you walk for 24 minutes a day, in May? Or cycle 24 miles? Swim 24 lengths? Practice yoga for two hours 40 across the month?”

“We are trying to inspire the community as much as possible and get people reaching new goals, setting new targets for themselves, and adding some diversity of movement into their typical routine.”

As the days are getting longer and better weather is around the corner, families are encouraged to move together this May.

Emily said: “We want to encourage people to exercise as a individual or with their family, or to get involved with any kind of local movement classes that are on offer.”

As well as donating to Mind in Salford, participants are encouraged to set up their own donation pages and raise money by setting themselves individual movement challenges across the month.

Emily continued: “We have a Just Giving page for the campaign that we’ve set up, but people can create their own pages so they can have a virtual movement challenge that is also in aid of our work”

It is also Stress Awareness Month this April and Mind in Salford are encouraging people to exercise to feel better.

Mind in Salford argue that if stress isn’t dealt with, it can be quite damaging for your muscles, your thought patterns and your behaviour.

Alongside the virtual challenge, Mind in Salford is also urging the public to take part in the ‘Bikeathon Challenge’.

During Mental Health Awareness Week, staff members from Metrolink and Mind in Salford will be at Eccles, Media City and Exchange Quay tram stops with an electric bike, with Mind in Salford setting a target of 24 miles or more, per stop.

Emily added: “If people have been wanting to move more, and have also wanted to do something for their local mental health charity, then it’s a great opportunity to do so.

“Do something for you and for your mind, and help support vital services in the meantime.”
