Salford City to play Wigan in the Vertu Trophy

Salford City will make the journey to face Wigan Athletic for their first fixture in the Vertu Trophy.

The Ammies will face off against Wigan at the Brick Community Stadium for the first time on Tuesday night (2 September).

Karl Robinsons’ side will be coming into this opening group game looking to regain their winning form.

Salford City have been without a win since beating Newport County 1-0, losing to Walsall, and drawing to bottom of the league Cheltenham on Friday night (29 August).

And will be looking to use this fixture as an opportunity to bounce-back and beat a team from the Sky Bet League One.

The meeting will be the first time that Salford will play at the Brick Community Stadium and will kick off on Tuesday 2nd September for a 19.00pm.

But they will be taking some confidence into this game following their performance against Rotherham United from the Carabao Cup, where Karl Robinsons’ side were able to take them to penalties.

However, with this being a group stage fixture Salford will be hoping to kick start their tournament campaign with a win, but this will be no easy task with Wigan also looking to use this fixture to kick on with their league season,

Ryan Lowe’s side are coming into the game with only one defeat in the last six, however, despite their unbeaten form have only managed two victories in the league.

And coming off a draw with Stockport County, another member of the teams shared group – the Latics will be hoping to use this fixture as a good opportunity to get another victory.

But with Salford being winless in their last three games, they will certainly be looking to utilise this cup competition as a good chance to springboard their season back on track.

Salford City themselves have had a busy transfer window and will be looking to use every game they have got to really gel the team together.

And both sides will have their chance of securing their first win of the cup competition tonight, as they face off at the Brick Community Stadium – with kick off scheduled for 7pm.
