A Dad from Eccles is taking on men’s mental health problems through using boxing coaching.
David Harte from Eccles is a father of 3 and a husband, who is spreading awareness for men’s mental health.
Following Covid and the passing of his father he turned to boxing.
“After my Dad’s passing I fell into a heavy depression. Last year was one of my worst years, then I decided to go back to boxing.”
This inspired David to start training again, working with a professional boxer in 1-to-1 sessions, which led to him taking a boxing fit course to become a coach at Hatton Academy.
The first person David started to coach 1-to-1 was Ethan, a young lad who is autistic and struggles with his mental health.
After training with Ethan for a month he received a heart-warming message from his mother.
“Ethan has improved so much mentally and physically,” read the message. “He tried rugby, football and counselling but this is the one that’s worked.”
Dave admits he is still learning and teaching the basics but he believes physical health can benefit mental health.
Before boxing training, David tried several things to help with his mental health, such as support groups in Eccles.
He believes some people find it easier to open up over social media, after admitting he found it difficult to join in-person meetings when he was struggling with his own mental health.
David said “I wanted to go in, but as I got to the door I turned away. It was just too daunting.”
“I think people can relax more on social media and talk more about their troubles, so I will open a group chat.”
“People can come on anonymously and still talk about their problems.”
David’s Facebook is David Harte Boxing where he invites people to join his group chat, or book a boxing session.
