The Boundary Stone in Worsley has closed temporarily for a £270,000 refurbishment ahead of reopening on October 21 as a new sports-focused pub.
The popular community pub, which closed on Monday, September 28, will be transformed with new technology, improved facilities and a range of food, drink and entertainment options designed to bring a stadium-style experience to local sports fans.
General manager, Ian Critchley, said: “We have some amazing new technology, food and drink offers and events.”
The refurbishment will include multiple large screens, a state-of-the-art immersive sound system and flexible tiered seating, giving customers an improved view of live sporting events.
The pub will also feature local sports memorabilia and is inviting residents to contribute photographs and items celebrating the achievements of local teams and athletes, past and present.
“We want as many local people to be featured on our walls as possible,” Critchley said.
Once reopened, the pub will broadcast a wide range of key sporting fixtures, including football, rugby, cricket, tennis, F1, darts, horse racing, and more. Traditional pub activities will also return, with regulation dartboards and pool tables alongside new competition leagues and free recreational sessions.
A new food menu, branded the ‘Match Day Menu’ will feature hand-held bites such as chicken wings and nachos, and pub favourites such as fish and chips and steak and ale pie, grills and burgers.
Local sports teams will be able to apply for a ‘Black Card’, offering exclusive discounts, unlimited chips on team nights and rewards for celebrating victories at their local pub.
The Grandstand concept follows industry research suggesting that 8.5 million consumers have watched live sport in pubs, with 86% of fans preferring sports pubs for their atmosphere, improved screens and sound systems, and opportunities to socialise with friends and family.
Marston’s selected the Boundary Stone for the transformation, in recognition of its established connections with local sports teams, community groups and charities.
The refurbishment aims to build on those relationships while creating a new destination for sports fans and the wider Worsley community.
