Salford Lads Club host final Salford Jets Mike Sweeney gig

Mike Sweeney and his band Salford Jets will be performing their final Northern gig at Salford Lad’s Club this weekend.

Sweeney, probably best known as a Radio DJ from Salford is hosting the morning show Monday to Thursday from 10 am to 2 pm.

He was recently honoured by Salford City Council, being named as one of the Salford 100, celebrating Salfordians in the City’s for its 100th anniversary of it being granted city status.

In an announcement on Facebook, Sweeney wrote: “SALFORD JETS FINAL LOCAL GIG

“It will be, I’m sure, an emotional night, but we will have an absolute ball… For those of you that are coming (friends old and new), we look forward to seeing you.”

The band will be supported by Fast Cars, another popular rock band.

Salford Jets made it onto the charts several times, with their biggest hit reaching number 72 in 1980 with “Who You Looking At?”

The Band reformed after a hiatus in 2002, and have put on gigs across the Northwest.

Fans can have reacted to the news, reminiscing about the band’s past. Bill Seaton wrote on Facebook: “I’m 85 years old I saw you live about 45yrs ago. I can’t remember where it was; sorry, but it was a cracking night I’ve followed you on and off on the radio all these years. Sorry to miss your farewell gig.

“Thanks for all the pleasure you have given me over the years.”

Another user, Paul Ward, also commented on the announcement post saying: “I went to Hope High from 86-91, and my art teacher was Mr Hubbard (Former Member of the Band). He once told us he was part of a band, and obviously there was no Internet then. Years later, I seen a picture of the band and thought, No way he wasn’t blagging after all.”

Mike added his post, “The gig sold out in two days but the club occasionally gets returns, so please check.”
