BIRTHDAY boy Danny Tickle received the plaudits of his coach after Leigh Centurions 30-0 victory over Huddersfield Giants at the Leigh Sports Village on Friday night.
Jukes said in his post-match press conference: “It was Danny Tickle’s birthday today and he was a country mile man of the match for me.”
“He took a late one really, early on, which I think obviously he didn’t give a foul, but it was a tough one. Not many would’ve got up.”
“He played a little bit out of position. He’s not played in that back row for a while now, but I thought he was brilliant and really epitomised what our team is about, just getting on with your job no matter where you are.”
The victory was the Centurions’ second of the season and saw them overtake the Giants in the league table on points difference.
Jukes said of the performance: “We came up with some really big defensive plays. Big ditch efforts to keep them from getting the ball down and obviously our attack was stop start really for 55, 60 minutes.”
“We brought Micky (Higham) on and asked him to grab the game by the scruff of the neck. We did 12 sets in a row.”
“If we weren’t scoring we were putting them in the corners and were disciplined off the back of it.”
Leigh have already matched their win total from 2005, which was their last season in Super League. A win against Warrington on Thursday night would see them pass the points total from that season.
Jukes said of that fixture: “We can’t just stand back and wait and see what’s going to happen here and try and stay with them. We’ve just got to go at it again.”
“It is a bit of a fortress this place as well. Our results here have been brilliant.”
Leigh won all four of their home fixtures in last season’s Super League Qualifiers, including a 48-40 win against Huddersfield.
