SALFORD University is hoping to encourage more people to blow the whistle.
With 35 different sports on offer across its various campuses, the student union is appealing for more referees and umpires to get involved in officiating team and individual sports.
Rachael Davies, sports partnership manager for the university’s student union, says:“We want to actively encourage students to join in and help referee our sports.
“The skills that you gain from taking part can help you even beyond university.”
Many of the university’s sport teams compete against teams from universities across the country, and six different clubs regularly hold competitions against one another on campus – all of which would need officiating.
As well as boosting your mental and physical health, refereeing sports is a great way to get involved with people from across the country and also offers a fantastic boost to your CV.
Davies added: “As well as meeting new people you can improve your personal fitness and general health and learning new skills is something we always encourage.
“We think many students would be interested in officiating their peers and friends; it’s a great opportunity to get involved in campus life.”
Some roles would require previous experience or qualifications, but many would include the training needed to officiate the sport you choose.
And, in certain cases, some of the roles that are being offered would even be paid.
