10-time Brazilian Jiu Jitsu world champion, Roger Gracie will conduct a seminar at Salford’s Roger Gracie Academy today.

Roger is highly regarded in the BJJ scene and is considered by many as one of the greatest practitioners the sport has produced.

The Gracie family are one of the most influential families in terms of the development of modern-day martial arts and were instrumental in the creation of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

Roger particularly  has been a key aspect of the growth of BJJ in the UK, with academies across the country as well as the flagship gym in London where he is the head instructor.

Professor, Mike Dorrian, coach at the Roger Gracie Academy speaks on the magnitude of Rogers’ appearance and backing of the gym.

“It’s like Cristiano Ronaldo coming to the gym and for him to come to Salford of all places is mad”.

“Roger coming down, teaching his techniques and sharing his knowledge, it’s a great opportunity for everyone”.

The academy itself offers classes for all ages and levels of ability as well as being run by a team of elite practitioners chosen by Roger himself.

“Roger has put together a team of instructors from Brazil and other parts of the world, all trained to the highest standard of Jiu Jitsu”.

Classes are offered 7 days a week in the morning and evening, not just providing BJJ instruction but a welcoming community too.

“The Academy is well known for the exceptional atmosphere that is fostered there. The result is a relaxed and enjoyable place in which to train”.

Mike went on to speak about the plans they have for the gyms future, including programs that will cater to the younger generation.

“In the next few weeks we will be starting an anti bullying program, as well as a program for families who maybe can’t afford the regular sessions to give the kids an opportunity to get involved”.

The martial arts scene in Salford is improving by the day, with gyms like The Roger Gracie Academy bolstering the local reputation.
