Yellow weather warnings have been put in place for much of the UK as high winds and snow are on their way as part of Storm Barra.

According to the Met Office, Salford will be ‘cold and frosty’ before the storm arrives later, with a maximum temperature of 4°C.

Storm Barra, which is a deep area of low-pressure moving in from the Atlantic today, has already left thousands of homes and businesses in the Republic of Ireland without power.

The Royal Horticultural Society decided yesterday to close parts of its Salford Bridgewater garden due to today’s forecast.

Lightwaves, the outdoor light festival currently taking place at Salford Quays, will also be closed this evening because of the storm.

The decision follows the sinking of the festival’s ‘Floating Earth’ installation as a result of the bad weather last weekend.

Storm Barra has now caused organisers of the Van Gogh Alive experience at MediaCityUK to close the exhibition for the rest of today.
