It’s getting to that time of year where everybody is worrying about what presents they are going to buy for Christmas. Typically, the average shopper goes down the same old route of bath bombs and socks, but you could try something different. You could buy from one of Salford’s up and coming spirit companies.
One such distillery is the Salford Rum Company.
The company has been making waves in the spirit business for some time now and recently won the Rising Star Award at the Salford Business awards.
Their sweet golden spiced rum has recently been joined by their newest edition – a dark spiced rum, which has been launched just in time for Christmas.
The packaging is also a popular selling point, as the ceramic bottles are adorned with art from local artist Dave Draws, depicting the Salford docks and the surrounding areas. The taste, style and shear authenticity of this local spirit all make for a fantastic gift this Christmas.
As well as recently winning The Rising Star Award at the Salford Business Awards, the Salford Rum Company have recently opened up a stall at the Manchester Christmas markets for the first time this year.
One of the stall workers, Danielle, said: “The product is great if you have a connection to Salford. It is also sourced locally, which has obvious environmental benefits.”
Salford Rum can be purchased online, in Harvey Nichols or in Selfridges.
The general consensus is that people are very much open to the prospect of buying locally, but fears over pricing as well as sticking with well known common brands often prevents them from doing so.

Another Salford based spirit is Nicholas James gin. The founder of the self entitled gin, Nicholas James, has said: “Being Salford born & bred is such a great privilege… and so what better way to pay homage to the city I grew up in than to have a top quality, premium gin brand for the people to get involved with and be proud of.”
The gin comes in two flavours, with the standard being full of unusual botanicals and fruit and the other a fruity raspberry flavoured gin.
The gin can be bought online or in Selfridges.
It is clear that the Salford drink business is on the up, and it is important that we continue to support this growth and help to put Salford on the map.
