Swinton Lions RLFC play their first home game of the new Betfred Championship against Dewbury Rams at Heywood Road on Sunday afternoon.

The season ahead is an exciting one and the signs are very promising, their final pre-season game was an upset (all be it against a second-string Warrington side) as they beat Super League Warrington Wolves 16-12 at Heywood Road.

Swinton Lions got off to a winning start in the Betfred Championship, winning 14-0 away from home at Whitehaven.

It was the first time since 1994 at Hoghton Road against Highfield in which Swinton have prevented their opposition from scoring a single point away from home.

It was the ideal start to the new season with a convincing win against newly promoted Whitehaven as the Lions look to build on the promising foundations from last season when they finished 9th in the league.

However, Dewsbury Rams got off to a much less convincing start to Swinton, as they lost 36-10 on their home turf to Leigh Centurions.

This season will take the Lions across the country and even into Europe on away days, including a trip to London Bronco’s ground Ealing Trailfinders Rugby Club and a game overseas against Toulouse Olympique at the Stade Ernest-Argeles.

In September 2019, a new era was embarked upon this historic community club after the shock departure of six directors.

The new club director Stuart Fletcher was involved with the club’s financial restructure in 2017 and has once again stepped into help the club.

There is finally some optimism for the club’s long-term stability despite still playing their home games in Sale.

The club ideally would like to move to a stadium closer to Swinton in the long-term but for now the club is in a position of stability and they will be hoping to have another successful season.
