Salford Grimsby

Salford City drew with newly promoted Grimsby Town at the Peninsula stadium.

Salford were quickly set on their way when a corner from Odin Bailey assisted Theo Vassell in scoring inside the first two minutes of the game.

But Vassell’s first goal of the season ignited the visitors into action. Despite the Ammies persisting with pressure, Grimsby Town were the ones who held the majority of possession following the goal.

It almost looked to be another goal for Salford from Matthew Lund but the former Salford City goalkeeper, Max Crocombe, was efficient in stopping the home team gain a stronger lead.

In front of the 1,309 travelling fans, the Mariners levelled the score in the 29th minute with a goal from Lewis Richardson, the teenager on loan from Burnley.

Seconds before the half-time mark Salford tried to make a breakaway but Grimsby’s Crocombe was on top form.

Salford had 10 men for a few minutes, during a free kick for the Mariners, as substitute Matt Smith struggled to get his wedding ring off.

After a fairly uneventful second half, the match ended in a draw, which mirrored the result of 18 months ago when the two sides last went head-to-head at the Peninsula stadium.

The draw meant Salford City remain in fifth position with Grimsby Town dropping to 13th.

Goal scorer Vassell said: “Personally I don’t think we did enough with the ball. We didn’t manoeuvre it well enough or quick enough and I do think we are a lot better than what we showed today. I don’t think we gave enough.”

Speaking after the match, manager Neil Wood said: “It’s frustrating because we had chances and right in the target and we’re getting in good places and we don’t finish it off and I’m pretty sure if other teams get that they punish us.”

Woods then turned his attention to upcoming matches, he said: “We’ve actually got a good month coming up. It’s a month that anyone in this league if you’re a player, should look forward to.”

Salford’s next match is their first away trip of October, where they travel to Northampton Town who were last season’s play-off semi-finalists.
