Building cobbled streets has been touted as the solution to Salford’s pothole road problem.

Salford Councillor Arnold Saunders said that he wants to introduce 19th century style cobbled roads which he claims would reduce vehicle damage on Salford’s roads.

He said: “During a council meeting about land use in the Salford area, I had a lightbulb moment. I thought that a good way of reducing vehicle damage was to replace horrible tarmac roads with cobbled streets. It will firstly give Salford an old fashioned look, almost like that of Coronation Street but in real life.

“It is a problem for both motor vehicles and also for cyclists and people running too. It effects everyone. No one likes potholes. This is why i brought up the idea of having cobbled streets.”

Areas such as Salford’s Chapel Street already feature historic cobbled streets. Many European cities already have cobbled streets, including Rue Cremieux in Paris, Chalcot Square in London and Victoria Street in Edinburgh. They have proven to be a success for motorists as well as for a city itself giving it a living and breathing taste of its history.

Cllr Saunders added that his plan would also boost tourism across the city.

He said: “The streets could do with a nice clean up so we can attract more visitors to the city. On our many of our roads the tarmac has disintegrated and caused huge cavities in the roads.”

There were 1.3 billion vehicle miles travelled in the city of Salford alone in 2021, which is expected to rise in the future.

Cllr Saunders said the positive aspects of the plan would outweigh the negatives.

He added: “Its true that cars will have to go slower because of the road surface, as it’s not as good as tarmac for a motorised vehicle to get up to speed. This will lead to people having to drive slower. Which is good for the environment as much less co2 will be produced if cars travel slower.

“If we keep filling in the holes are we really making progress? This is why I personally think cobbles as a new road surface is applicable for a historic city like Salford.”
