It’s Shrove Tuesday, so we’ve looked at the price of buying pancake ingredients from four of Salford’s major shops during the cost of living crisis.

The BBC’s recipe for 12 pancakes requires flour, eggs, milk and oil. We have added the cost of honey and sugar for toppings.

The average price of these ingredients at these supermarkets was £8. Aldi was the cheapest at £7.11 and the most expensive was Lidl at £8.56.

The prices of many of these ingredients, like cooking oil, have risen due to the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Vegetable oil increased by more than 60 per cent between September 2021 and September 2022 according to the Office of National Statistics.

There have also been shortages in eggs which has led to a price increase because of a rise in avian flu cases.

The price of milk also rose by nearly 30 per cent between September 2021 and September 2022  according to the Office of National Statistics.

The £8 price on making pancake batter, which according to the BBC’s good food website makes 12 pancakes, works out at around 66p per pancake.

Ollie Counsell, from Langworthy, said:

“You used to be able to make 16 for far cheaper than that, it’s quite bad really.”
