Adrian Mariappa pre Newport (Ben Fieldhouse)

Adrian Mariappa has said that head coach, Neil Wood, still has the full backing of the squad following a poor run of form.

Speaking ahead of Salford City’s game against the exiles this weekend, the Jamaican international said:
“Yes certainly [do the players back Neil Wood?] I think we’ve been unlucky with things like injuries to some of our big players.

“We’ve got a good solid group, look at what came off of the bench against Harrogate. We’ve got more than enough experience within the group.”

Salford have not won a league game since August and have lost six consecutive games in all competitions following their exit from the Carabao cup on Tuesday.

“We had a day off after the Burnley game, the lads are in good spirits, obviously the cup run came to an end. It was a good experience and we beat some good teams. Now the focus turns back to the league.”

On the poor run of form for the Ammies, the Jamaican international said:

“There’s loads of reasons why you go through these sorts of patches of form. As a collective we aren’t making excuses we are looking at ourselves. We know we’ve got more than enough to be winning games.

“Last season is gone and we cant look at last season for a reference. We are taking care of business now, we have a different team to last season and we are focused on the next game.”

On what Saturday’s opposition will offer, the experienced defender is cautious but confident.

“Every side will come here wanting to win, Newport are a very good side but we’ve done our research and the preparation and the mind set has to be spot on to get three points.”

Adrian Mariappa and Salford will kick off against Newport County at 3pm on Saturday 30th September.
