Community groups from across Irlam and Walkden have been awarded grants of up to £500 to support green community projects.
The groups accepted their grants at an awards ceremony at Rixton with Glazebrook Community Hall on November 2.
Some of the successful applicants from this year’s Freedom Fund awards include:
1. Friends of Parr Fold Park, this group was awarded £500 to contribute towards transforming an area of the Walkden park into a biodiverse and “wildlife-friendly haven” by creating a pond surrounded by pollinator-friendly plants.
2. The Rotary Club of Irlam, which was awarded £500 to contribute towards installing planters to lampposts in Irlam and Cadishead.
3. Poorlots Allotment and Leisure Society, which was awarded £500 to contribute towards a liner for a large pond in a wildlife nature reserve.
4. The Ability Cooperative Ltd, this group was awarded £500 to contribute towards a new carpet underlay for plants at Prince’s Park Garden Centre in Irlam.
5. Recreate-U, which was awarded £500 to contribute towards creating a new bird watching space for local residents, as well as create a seating area in the new nature reserve.
6. Friends of Irlam Library, they were awarded £500 to contribute towards a NatureArk to enhance biodiversity and rainwater collection system for the library’s back garden.
Neil McArthur, Chief Executive Officer of broadband provider, Freedom Fibre said: “The non-profit groups that have received the funding are all working to positively impact their communities through education, sustainability efforts, and projects that bring local residents together.”
