Nominations for candidates who wish to stand in the upcoming Salford Quays by-election have now opened.
A by-election was called in the wake of the resignation of Liberal Democrat councillor Alex Warren. He vacated his position in order to take up a new role with Watford Council, describing his time representing the Quays as “the privilege of a lifetime.”
Warren, who was the leader of the Lib Dem group on the council, said: “And so now, with a heavy heart, I am moving away to start the next chapter in my life. I am so glad I have managed to achieve so much over the last few years here.”
The election to fill the seat will take place on January 11 2024, with the nominations process opening this morning.
Candidates can collect and hand in their nomination papers at the returning office at Salford City Council’s Swinton Civic Centre building.
In order to have a successful application, potential contenders will need to submit the nomination form, a home address form and a consent to nomination form.

The deadline for candidates submitting their papers is at 4.30pm, Tuesday December 12 2023.
Cllr Warren’s statement reveals that the Liberal Democrats will nominate Paul Heilbron as their candidate for the by-election, with the other parties yet to announce their own.
There are also multiple upcoming cut-off points for voters, with the deadline to register to vote ahead of this by-election at midnight on Thursday 21 December.
Amendments to applications must be submitted by Friday 22 December, with proxy vote applications needing to be delivered by Wednesday 3rd January.
