Salford Red Devils RFL - Peaceful protest march

Salford Red Devils fan group ‘The 1873’ have organised a peaceful and lawful protest ahead of the fixture against Wakefield Trinity.

With the contest between the Red Devils and Wakefield Trinity being hosted at the Salford Community Stadium, on Sunday 17 August.

The fan group will meet at Salford City Roosters Rugby Club at 12pm and will walk together to the stadium at 1pm – with the route ending outside the main reception of the Salford Community Stadium.

The fan group will be using the peaceful protest march to “demand greater communication, transparancy, and accountability from the club’s ownership.”

And “the protest aims to give fans a collective voice and to highlight concerns over the current direction and engagement practices of the club.”

Ahead march Salford fans have been encouraged to bring “banners, flags, and wearing club colours to show unity and pride.”

A spokesperson for The 1873 said: “This protest is about respect – respect for the club’s history, its supporters, and its community.

“We are asking the ownership to engage meaningfully and transparently with the people who stand by this club week in and week out.

“This is a peaceful step, but an important one.”

The fan group ‘The 1873’ have also stressed to participating members that the march will “be a peaceful and lawful demonstration, coordinated to ensure the safety and respect of all participants, stadium staff, and the wider public.”

The peaceful protest march follows the growing unrest from supporters, who have become increasingly concerned for the future of their club.

Salford Red Devils were taken over by a consortium in February led by businessman Dario Berta who purchased the club, after it was placed under a £1.2m sustainability salary cap by the RFL.

Over the last couple of months, the club has seen a number of players exit, including captain Ryan Brierley.

And after the defeat to Hull FC, where the club lost 80-6 – the concerns for the future of the club continued to grow, with the team having to rely on loan players to field a team.

Following the game, the owners shared a statement insisting “they will not close”, as they continued in a statement.

“Despite recent setbacks, the club is in the process of establishing a new team to stabilise operations moving forward, alongside securing bridge funding that restores immediate financial stability and lays the foundation for a sustainable future.

“This marks a turning point and underscores the consortium’s long-term commitment to the Red Devils.

“We understand the frustration many fans feel. But we want to be clear: Salford Red Devils will not close.”
