A unique arts project, ‘What About Me’, has given young people in Salford the chance to share their stories through film, art and music.

‘What About Me?’ mixer, commissioned by Greater Manchester Arts and Salford Community Leisure (SCL), was delivered by Breaking Barriers with funding from the GMCA Culture Programme.

The project explored the thoughts, feelings and experiences of young people in Salford, with youth voice at the centre of the work.

A Young Company of six emerging filmmakers and musicians from Salford joined the production team, supported by Salford City Council’s Culture Team. The young creatives, many of whom were still studying or starting their careers, gained valuable industry experience through the project.

Breaking Barriers, a Rochdale-based production company, worked with local youth groups, schools and community organisations to co-produce the creative work during spring and summer, before showcasing the final pieces in autumn 2025.

Later this month, Breaking Barriers’ ‘What About Me?’ programme will launch an immersive audio and visual experience where visitors walking around the park can tune in to hear voices from hundreds of young Salfordians.

Participants will hear the voices of young people have authentic discussions about where they live, where they play, where they feel safe and where they want the course of their life to take them.

Locals can adventure through the park on the 23rd-25th October to learn about the secret cul-de-sac football matches and all the best spots for a sugary snack.

Asa Keenan, Assistant Active Communities Manager at SCL, said: “Across Salford, many young people face a disconnect from local culture and creative opportunities.

“Using the funding, the partnership aims to bridge the gap, empowering young people to explore, express and shape their own narratives within society.”

Jodie Ratcliffe, Executive Producer at Breaking Barriers, said: “Embedding six assistant roles within the creative team gave both professionals and young people a chance to learn from each other.

“Working alongside the assistants opened up new ideas and ensured youth voice was at the heart of the work.”
