“It’s something you’ve never seen before:” Salfordians are set to descend on the Old Pint Pot this weekend as the Chapel Street Pub hosts Blobtoberfest – an off-the-wall celebration of the city’s music and comedy scene in aid of local food banks.
The small-scale festival, headlined by aptly named “in your face” double-act ‘Blob Halford,’ launches in Salford on Saturday 25 October, with all proceeds committed to charities, distributing food across Greater Manchester this Winter.
Supporting the two-piece “groove and stoner rock” band are father and son rap duo ‘FMA +12 Gage,’ soul-punk quartet ‘77 Spears,’ Liverpool-based alternative band ‘Abdicator,’ southern hard rockers ‘Smoke Over Elsewhere’ and ‘The Kev’ – a guitar-playing comedian.
“These are the nicest, most genuine guys on the circuit who we have played with or seen before,” said Lee Daintry, one half of Blob Halford and the mastermind behind the charity festival.
Daintry explained that all five of the support acts listed on the bill offer something completely different stylistically to ensure the event remains “exciting, diverse and engaging for all.”
Born in Bury, he moved to Orlando and picked up a perceptible American twang. When asked to pinpoint the most notable difference in music this side of the pond, he highlighted that British audiences bring more energy to grassroots gigs.
“People over here don’t have to know the name of the band, across the UK they go above and beyond to support local music – that is something I love.”
“It feels amazing to be on stage and hear the crowd chanting your name.”
Daintry highlighted that the organisers were carrying out their due diligence, selecting the most suitable local food bank, before explaining the motivation behind the fundraiser.
“I am a Christian and believe nobody should be without food. It is great to support these charities at a tough time when winter is around the corner, driving up people’s bills and make sure people get the help they need.
“We are in a first-world country, but similar to the scenes in the US, when the government are not providing for the people, we have to use our power to step in and make a difference.”
Tickets for Blobtoberfest cost £8, with all proceeds going to charity. They are available for purchase here.
