Eccles Chess Club are celebrating winning the Greater Manchester and Stockport leagues.
The wins put Eccles at the heart of chess in the North as they marked their achievements at their annual meeting at the UK’s only dedicated High Street chess club building.
This follow’s the club’s previous success at the French European Chess Tournament by members Gediminas Sarakauskas and Martin Mitchell in December 2024.
Barbara Farrar, owner and manager of the club, has been urged to select two more players to compete in the tournament towards the end of the year.
A recent visit from chess grandmaster, Danny Gormally, who “captivated” the club for two hours, is part of their efforts to keep members learning and improving, with engaging talks from more experienced players with opportunity for book and board signing.
Barbara said: “Danny has a real gift for engaging the audience and getting people to interact with one another, which is such a positive way to share chess with our community.”
There are opportunities for everyone to get involved with organised groups, such as social chess nights, running regularly every Wednesday, ‘Ladies and Learners’ on a Monday and further sessions for more advanced players.
