A West End star actor and an Oliver Award-winning director have joined forces to stage an extraordinary one-man adaptation of A Christmas Carol at the King’s Arms Pub.
Fresh from London’s West End and The Old Vic, Colin Connor will perform over 30 in a daring and intimate performance at the iconic Salford venue.
Using only Dickens’ original text, the breadth of Connor’s acting talent will be put to the test, proving that world-class talent can be found in the heart of a local community.
The production runs at The King’s Arms Theatre, Salford, from Tuesday 9 December to Sunday 21 December.
This hopeful and heartfelt production champions the idea that “world-class” theatre can thrive outside national stages. By staging this classic in the intimate theatre above The King’s Arms pub, the producers aim to deliver a powerful and accessible experience for the Salford community this Christmas, with tickets priced at just £2 for under-18s to ensure affordability.
This production marks the fourth collaboration between Rising Moon Productions and Form and Pressure, continuing their shared mission of championing bold, professional theatre in intimate settings.
Previous collaborations from the team have been hailed by critics, with British Theatre Guide praising their work as: “A very classy production with a quality of cast you might expect to see on one of our big stages rather than in a small room over a pub.”
The 90-minute show is a showcase of theatrical daring. Connor single-handedly performs over 30 distinct characters, embodying everyone from Ebenezer Scrooge to Tiny Tim.
The adaptation is unique in its fidelity to the source material, using only the original words of Charles Dickens. This approach is faithful to the author’s own tradition, as Dickens himself frequently performed public readings of the story for captivated audiences.
“I hope this adaptation for one actor allows the audience to hear Dickens’ voice more clearly,” said adapter and director David Thacker. “It’s a story I love, and we are using every word Dickens wrote; nothing has been added. Colin is an incredibly versatile and powerful actor and I’m loving working with him to bring Dickens’ wonderful story to life.”
Lisa Connor, Producer and creator of the Greater Manchester Fringe, said: “Bringing a production of this calibre, with artists like David and Colin, to our intimate theatre at The King’s Arms is what we are all about.
“This is a chance for our community to see something truly special, accessible and affordable.”
In the true spirit of Dickens’ story of charity and community, the production is set to partner with a local food bank, and audiences will be invited to bring donations to the theatre, directly supporting those in need within the Salford community this Christmas.
