A national bank has opened its newest store in Salford, sparking support from local politicians amid concerns over diminishing face-to-face services.
The new Metro Bank branch at Capital Quay opened on Thursday 20 November.
The bank replaces an Indian restaurant spot called Shahi Masala.
The opening was led by Salford City Councillor Teresa Pepper, who highlighted the importance of reliable, in-person banking for older residents, vulnerable people and anyone who still relies on cash.
“Access to cash and essential services, particularly for older and vulnerable people who rely on face-to-face banking, is clearly a concern across the UK,” she said.
“And with many high street banks closing their doors, reaching 66% of the network that existed a decade ago, it’s a pleasure to welcome Metro Bank to Salford.
“As one of the UK’s fastest growing investment destinations, our ambition for Salford is to build a more inclusive economy, and Metro Bank’s aim reflects the support we want to see in local communities and for businesses, which will help to provide a local connection and a friendly, customer-focused face.”

Salford MP Rebecca Long-Bailey also welcomed the new store, praising the jobs and investment it brings into the community.
“It’s great to see new investment and job opportunities coming to Salford,” she said. “I’m pleased to welcome Metro Bank to our city and look forward to seeing the team play an active role in supporting local people and businesses.”
The store offers full counter services, an external ATM, cash deposit facilities, and a Safe Deposit Box service for families and businesses. It also provides a Safe Space for anyone experiencing domestic abuse.
The store is staffed by a local team led by Salford-born North West Local Director Sam Onafalujo, who said he is looking forward to welcoming residents and supporting neighbourhood groups and small businesses across Salford Quays and beyond.
Open Monday to Friday from 9.30am to 5pm.
Metro Bank Salford is located at Unit 1, Capital Quay, The Quays, Salford, M50 3WL.
