Snow and ice

Salfordians travelling by road and railway have been warned to expect disruption after snow fell across the region last night.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for snow and ice across Greater Manchester until 12pm on Monday, 5 January.

It highlights that some roads and railways are likely to be affected, with longer journey times expected for road users as well as bus and train services.

The weather warning states that “some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces” are expected and advises people to be cautious of icy patches on untreated roads, pavements, and cycle paths.

Temperatures are expected to drop as low as -5C before rising again towards the end of the week.

According to Salford City Council, no schools in the city have been closed as a result of the adverse weather conditions.

National Rail has asked commuters to check before they travel.

During the winter, snow and ice can build up on the railway. Ice can coat the overhead lines and the electrified third rail, which prevents trains from drawing the power needed to run.

This can leave trains stranded. Icicles on bridges, tunnels and other structures can also cause damage to trains and overhead lines.

If heavy snow builds up deeper than 30cm this can also prevent trains from running safely, unless they have been fitted with a snow plough.

Train services are currently running as normal at Salford Crescent and Salford Central railway stations.
