A new primary school supporting children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) will be built in Salford.

£7.43 million in funding has been awarded to build a school for 150 SEND children on the former St George’s RC High School site in Walkden.

If a bid for planning approval is successful, the school will open by Spring 2029 as part of the Co-op Academies Trust.

Salford Council successfully lobbied the Department for Education for funding and says the new school will allow pupils to access the support they need within the city, instead of having to travel elsewhere.

Salford City Mayor Paul Dennett hailed the decision by the Department for Education to approve the multimillion-pound grant.

He said: “We’re delighted to share the news that a brand-new, purpose-built special school for children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities will be created in Walkden.

“The primary school will create a space where the children can thrive, learn, and feel supported.

“Thanks to funding from the Department for Education, the school will provide high-quality educational opportunities for children with SEND in Salford.”

The new primary school is planned to be built on the former St George’s RC High School site in Walkden.

Councillor Jim Cammell, Lead Member for Children’s and Young People’s Services praised the move to create a new SEND school in Salford.

He said: “This new school means children can learn close to home, in a setting designed specifically for their needs, with all the right facilities and care under one roof.

“This school is a vital step toward our vision of a Child Friendly Salford – a city where every child feels safe, valued, and heard, and where they have the best opportunities to learn, play, and grow.”

Councillor Joshua Brooks, Executive Support Member for Education, Learning and School Improvement, said: “The new school is good news for communities in Salford, as there is a requirement for additional support and capacity for SEND children’s educational needs.

“This small primary school, which is planned to be on the land of the former St George’s RC High School site, will be well placed and supported in the community.”

Dr Chris Tomlinson, CEO of Co-op Academies Trust, added: “We are delighted to be working in partnership with Salford City Council to deliver a new primary special school for the city.

“At Co-op Academies Trust, we are committed to inclusive education and supporting families to feel confident, supported and part of their local community.

“We look forward to working closely with the council to bring this school to life and help ensure more children with SEND can learn closer to home, in a setting designed around their needs.”
